I write this letter so people understand that Melanomas and Sun cancer may be controlled if not neglected in the early stages. Everyone must be vigilant.
I grew up in the 1960’s and enjoyed our weekly Sundays down the Gold Coast. I got sunburnt nearly every summer weekend during that time.
My first major occupation was as a railway clerk in Mount Isa. Later I joined the Queensland Police service and served in many outback locations. More sun but no protection.
Over the years I have had some minor sun cancers removed. In 2008/2009 I had operations at a skin clinic for the removal of Melanomas from my back.
On 17th June 2011 I was diagnosed with brain tumours, later verified to have spread from the melanomas. I have since spent 33 days in hospital under the care of surgeons, doctors, specialists and nurses during the past 7 weeks.
On the 1st August 2011 two metastatic brain tumours were removed from my head and brain stem. 100% removal could not be guaranteed and apart from some areas of right side paralysis, I am talking and thinking. I have a large scar across the top of my head, (healing well).
On the 10th August I had a malignant tumour removed from my chest. Again this was verified to have come from the melanomas.
I am classed as terminal and due to commence Radiation on remaining cancer cells in my body on 24th August 2011. Talk of survival rates from Brain Cancer is minimal but I am confident. I tell my story because at 54 years old I am still young, and have come to terms with all my present situations. I also recommend to people to have all suspect skin problems checked. Young and older people should be aware that melanomas are a very active concern and need to be attended to as soon as possible to avoid far more serious consequences.
If someone needs to talk or ask questions regarding this serious disease give me a call or send me an e mail to discuss further if I can be of help.
